Since this is, apparently, May for Makers I thought I would share the story behind my name.
For those of you who don’t know, my name is Logan Newman. I’m not a woodworker by trade - I teach high school kids to make eyeglasses. I’ve been teaching for 22 years and have been woodworking for many of those years. I’ve come to the realization recently that I have ALWAYS been a maker. The first things I made and sold were card holders when I was in middle school - they must have been terribly ugly but my uncle bought them from me for his office. I made things I needed - when I was in the Navy I needed a headboard and shelves. I bought pine boards from Lowe’s and hand sanded them smooth, used mending plates to join them, and laid them on cinder blocks. My favorite part about teaching is the ability to be creative and make lessons and activities for my students that engage them.
I call my woodworking business Newman Specials for one reason. At some point I had a desk and needed a space for a printer and a place for extra storage. I made it from 2x4’s and plywood. It was a Frankenstein desk - when my wife and I moved into our first house I had a friend help us move, and he saw the desk and said “ what the hell is that? A Newman special?” When I had to name my business, it only seemed right to give it a name that would allow me to always remember that I started off making crap!
When I first started Instagram, I posted pictures of my work and some of my techniques over the years. My focus is changed to more woodworking education, and tips and techniques. It’ll help everyone.
