In this Bonsai video, we give this little Apple Tree a repot and a Trunk Chop! This tree was grown from a seed and planted two years ago!

We remove the old soil, trim the roots, and select the right pot size. Then, we perform a Trunk Chop - selecting the right branch to cut back to, and I show you how to seal the wound with cut putty to encourage proper healing and to prevent infection. I'll also explain the rationale behind the cut and demonstrate how to make a precise, clean cut that minimizes damage to the tree.

Why would you want to do a trunk chop?

If you are new to Bonsai and the idea of trunk chopping, it is a technique commonly used to promote new growth and to reduce the height of the tree. When a bonsai tree grows taller, it can become unbalanced and lose its aesthetic appeal. A trunk chop allows the tree to be reduced in height, making it more proportional and pleasing to the eye. This can give the bonsai tree a more mature and natural appearance with good taper over time as the upper most branch becomes the leader of the tree.
