Crossing Henri Pittier Park, forty minutes drive from Maracay, there is one of the nicest villages on the Venezuelan coast: Choroni. This is a trip you enjoy from the very beginning, while you drive through the misty tropical forest, which by itself makes this journey worthwhile.
The colonial architecture reveals the origin of this cosy village founded in 1616.
From Bolivar Square you can observe Santa Clara de Asis Church and Madre Maria de San Jose's House, rescued by the sisters of her community, where you may visit a small museum or pray at the chapel built on her name.
A ten-minute drive from Choroni will take you to Puerto Colombia, another village with the typical colonial houses, church, square and a pleasant sandy beach shaded by huge coconut palms, and known as Playa Grande. From Puerto Colombia you can go boat riding to other nearby beaches like Chuao and Cepe and enjoy the fresh water stream running down the mountain.
During weekends and holidays, drummers from both villages Choroni and Puerto Colombia cheer up the evenings with their native music, a typical spree that usually lasts until dawn.
