Captain Tumaini (hope) is a friendly, helpful superhero who helps to remind children, their caregivers, and teachers about how to be safe from COVID-19 in schools, while planning, and when someone is sick at home. USAID’s Tusome (Let's read in Kiswahili) Early Grade Reading activity (Tusome), a flagship partnership with the Government of Kenya’s Ministry of Education, co-created radio and television spots on COVID-19 messaging. The objective of the spots is to reinforce the preventive measures at home and in school by targeting early grade learners, with their caregivers and teachers as a secondary audience. The content, refined through pre-tests, is highly engaging. A household survey conducted after the distribution and limited media buys found strong message exposure and recall.
