PORTUGAL MOTOR RALLY
Portuguese Auto Rally won by Marku Alen (Finland). Race wrap scenes.
Victory for Finland's Marku Alen, driving a Lancia Delta, in the Portugal Rally that finished on Saturday took him into second place in the overall world championship standings, seven points behind the reigning champion, his compatriot and teammate Juha Kankkunen. But the event was overshadowed by the death of a spectator for the second year in succession. That tragedy emphasised the dangers, all too easily forgotten, associated with the sport. Following deaths and injury to drivers in previous seasons, the sport's governing body had introduced new regulations before the start of this season to curb the engine power of rally cars. So far, with three events completed, this seems to be having the desired effect. Yet spectator safety is always likely to be a problem, given the public's eagerness to witness such high-speed skill at close quarters.
