If you struggle keeping your head up on your serve, these 2 exercises could help a lot.
You spend most of your life with your head down, so when you go through the serve motion, your head is in a position your brain isn’t used to being in.
This challenges the vestibular system that lives in your inner ear.
So your brain tries to protect you by reducing the power in your legs preventing you from driving up into the ball…
AND by pulling your head down into a position it feels more comfortable in.
To help your keep your head up, you can train your vestibular system using simple exercises.
The first exercise is called a VORC.
Your job is to keep your eyes focused on a visual target while quickly moving your head.
In this video I’m doing 3 directions (up, up and right and up and left) because we have different receptors in our vestibular system that need training.
I’m looking at a letter in the logo of the ball, but you can use any visual target. The smaller the target, the more it challenges your visual system.
The second exercise is a smooth training exercise done in upwards head positions.
I’m holding my head in the same 3 positions and making a circular shape, again keeping my eyes focused on a target.
Often players will notice immediate improvements, but for best results work on the exercises consistently.
