Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian novel, meaning it tries to portray what our future would may look like if everything were to go terribly wrong. Much like similar novels Brave New World and 1984, it features a strong, suppressive government, and a general population which has given up most of its "truths" for a more convenient, entertaining culture.
Bradbury is going for much more than just "burning books is bad" here, though, which is why it has become such a classic. He also questions man's ability to do what is right for himself, the censorship of anything, and whether or not we, like the phenix, can rise again from our ashes and make our world beautiful like it once was.
