Forest Eagle Owl is famous for its strange, human-sounding call, it is the same as Ulama or "Devil Bird" in Sri Lanka. It is also identified by a local name Maha Bakamuna (large horned owl). The call of Ulama or the Forest Eagle Owl consists of a scream, which rises and then falls in tone. The bird’s voice is booming, deep and travels very far. It is common for wild owls to have a far-reaching and complex range of vocalizations. We spotted this Forest eagle owl at wilds of Wilpattu in a silent new moon night. You can hear dogs barking in the background as they were terrified of this strange sound. Even though the sound of forest eagle owl is fearsome, the bird actually is innocent and harmless. There are certain mythologies/ folklores attached to this sound of Ulama. And it is important to be noted that this is not the mating call of the species. The sound was recorded using a mobile phone.
