This video reviews what is vocational counselling.
Used as evidence for vocational options that are deemed suitable, vocational counselling is able to identify and mitigate barriers and develop return to work goals. Vocational counselling can be used to improve self and occupational awareness by understanding the job market and skills required, develop realistic return to work goals such as identifying the transferable skills, and also identify barriers that individuals can assist with decision-making regarding suitable job options. Other forms of support include asking about how one’s family is doing and their thoughts in return to work matters as well.
Barriers identified can include the lack of qualifications in training, one’s age since they could be near retirement, unrealistic vocational goals, culture of unemployment, and a home environment that is not conducive to job-seeking.
We as rehabilitation counsellors can request free sessions and compile a report after the sessions of vocational counselling. We also must understand that the purpose of the vocational counselling is to build a relationship and rapport with the injured worker, provide adjustment counselling in changing and individuals perspective regarding change of employment and circumstances, provide and identify agreed-upon return to work and rehabilitation barriers to address, and formulate a plan in executing and monitoring regularly the return to work process.
As rehabilitation consultants, we employ motivational interviewing in the form of person centred counselling to address common problems and ambivalence to change. We as consultants need to be curious about them and identify one’s aspirations. Curiosity is an active interest and genuine effort to desire for change is important. For principles and motivational interviewing include engaging, focusing, evoking and planning.
