The Museum consists of a group, or township, of seven thatched cottages, four of which are furnished and equipped as they would have been 100 years ago. Opened in 1965 , the aim of the museum was to completely preserve a township of thatched cottages each depicting the conditions that 19th century crofters faces.
Close to the museum is the Kilmuir graveyard where Flora MacDonald is buried.
