Here are some direct comparison images so you can see exactly what I have done to improve this Railroad model. Hornby Railroad models are more basic in detail than the Hornby Super-Detail models but then they cost about half price.
In this case the drive is the same, the moulded level of detail very similar, so it is a good model to buy cheap and then do it up. Here I have just added paints. But you could swap over the handrails, replace the whistle, all sorts if you were so inclined, as Howard Smith and BRM magazine are currently doing.
But the point here is that a simple nights effort and the engine is transformed from something that looks plastic to something more akin to a model. It is a bit of a revolution.
Music is from Tomb Raider.
Note: Given the choice I prefer to leave models as they came (just a few exceptions). I collect all sorts of things, and usually I (and collectors generally) leave things as they are. Firstly they can lose value but more importantly if you modify them, that is not how they were originally. Not how the manufacturer produced them. So I'd rather buy the super-detailed version too. The only modification I might make is to temporarily Blu-tack in figures (that can be removed without a trace). I don't even add the accessories pack usually in order to keep the originality. Keep them in the packets. That way it stays a Hornby product 100%.
But I never intended to get the P2. This Railroad second hand one came up. So I got it and it was in desperate need of improvement. I don't mind modifying my pre-owned models as often they are not mint. So I gave it a go. I think it was improved.
