Dr. Daniel Goleman: “How is it (EI) used now at google? Is it wide acceptance or narrow, or is it in onboarding or development? What's actually going on?”
Ruchika Sikri, Head of Well-being Learning Strategy, CultureDev - Google: “In my previous role, where I spent 7 years out of my 14 years career at google, emotional intelligence was basically very foundational for all the programs that we were bringing to our employees through my team. We mainly did that through Search Inside Yourself which is a two-day mindfulness-based emotional intelligence and neuroscience backed program, so the whole program was actually designed on the competencies of emotional intelligence - which are self-awareness, regulation, motivation, empathy and leadership skills. Because the demand of the program increased quite a bit a few years ago, and that's why a team like us was put together, to enable more Googlers to attend not just in one country or one place but really around the world. Through a lot of investment in scaling those programs we have been able to bring it to thousands of Googlers around the world, and I'm talking 15 to 20,000 employees have taken Search Inside Yourself. Much of the (program) today is actually emotional intelligence mindfulness, so we teach practices that have been proven to be very effective by neuroscience experiments done by amazing researchers around the world as a way to develop first of all self-awareness which is the foundational competency of EI as you know it, and on top of that we build the other building blocks which is how do you regulate that awareness, and then how do you find meaning and purpose in life, which brings motivation and also teach skills of empathy and compassion, which also leads us to become better leaders and have better social skills to interact with our peers our colleagues our community and our families.”
Dr. Daniel Goleman: “Could you name two or three cultural values at google that are supported by some aspect of emotional intelligence?”
Ruchika Sikri, Head of Well-being Learning Strategy, CultureDev - Google: “Because these trainings can be extensive, and you can imagine you know there's just so much focus and clarity available, so people are drinking through a fire hose you know when they join and so we have small meditations integrated, small mindful moments integrated, all throughout our onboarding process and then we do talk about if people want to have a more immersive experience they can actually sign up for Search Inside Yourself or Fundamentals of Mindfulness or for a gPause community, which is where people go to actually practice this to make it part of their life.”
