The Marieta Islands north of Puerto Vallarta, are without a doubt one of the activities you should put on your short list of tours and adventures to enjoy during your stay in Puerto Vallarta or elsewhere in the Banderas Bay area.
They are a small group of uninhabited islands a few miles off the North coast of the Banderas Bay in the state of Nayarit (closest town is Punta de Mita), with two main volcanic islands dating from around 60,000 years ago, one called Isla Redonda (Round Island) and the other Isla Larga (Long Island, no relationship to NY).
They have become a viral sensation and are known for their Hidden Beach, at the end of a tunnel that goes through from the sea side to an inner crater with a white sand beach. It's a natural island/beach formation and has become so popular that public tours have stopped and you must ask for permission and participate through authorized and numbered tours. Most tours take off from either Puerto Vallarta or Punta Mita.
