LOS ANGELES -- Chris Taylor sure has a knack for delivering when the Dodgers’ backs are against the wall.
Taylor went deep three times in the Dodgers' 11-2 win over the Braves in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series on Thursday night at Dodger Stadium. He’s the first player in postseason history to record a three-homer game with his team facing elimination, and just the second Dodger with three home runs in a playoff game, joining Kiké Hernández, who did so in the 2017 NLCS against the Cubs. Atlanta leads the series 3-2.
Taylor's first homer gave the Dodgers a 3-2 lead in the second inning, after they'd fallen behind the Braves, 2-0, in the first. He got a first-pitch fastball from left-hander Max Fried and sent it into the home bullpen, a Statcast-projected 406 feet. It was a two-run shot that put Los Angeles on top after AJ Pollock had led off the inning with a homer.
Taylor added an RBI single against Fried in the third inning, but Fried didn’t get to face Taylor again in the fifth. Braves manager Brian Snitker called for right-hander Chris Martin with Taylor due up. New pitcher, same result.
Taylor fell behind, 0-2, against Martin, who left a fastball thigh-high over the outer edge of the plate. Taylor demolished it, sending it a projected 415 feet to center and giving the Dodgers a 6-2 lead.
Taylor’s third blast was a solo shot into the left-center-field bleachers against lefty Dylan Lee, making it 7-2 Dodgers in the seventh.
This postseason, Taylor has been red hot, even as the Dodgers have kept him toward the bottom of their batting order. After his third home run, Taylor was hitting .375/.447/.844 with 12 RBIs this postseason -- including the walk-off blast to beat the Cardinals in the NL Wild Card Game.
Taylor's multihomer game was the 13th in Dodgers postseason history and the first since Corey Seager did so -- fittingly, against Atlanta in Game 5 of last year's NLCS. The Braves also led that series 3-1 at the time.
