Welcome to the Uncle Polo Free German course for beginners.
If your goal is to learn German, you have come to the right place. Our German curriculum is simple. There are 102 German video lessons on this channel subdivided into 20 units, with every unit made up of five video lessons plus two special lessons. The first two lessons are usually on German vocabulary, the second two lessons on German grammar and translation and the last lesson on German culture. The only exception is Unit 1 which has three German vocabulary lessons and only one German grammar and translation lesson. The two special lessons are on the German alphabet and Christmas in Germany.
You are free to use the videos however you see fit. But we suggest the following strategy for self study:
Send us an email at uncle@unclepolo.com to receive our free PDF text book. Print it out as hard copy.
Watch the youtube videos introducing the German vocabulary.
While watching, try to remember the meaning of the words in English or in your mother language. Take notes in your text book.
While watching, try to pronounce the words and sentences along with Vivi. The earlier you get your pronunciation right, the better your German will be in the long run.
Watch the German grammar and translation videos (Please note Unit 1 | Lesson 3 is a German vocabulary lesson, not a German grammar and translation lesson).
For our curriculum the grammar is not all that important, so feel free to skip it. But please do the translations. There may be several ways to translate a sentence, if you have other ideas, please leave it in the comment section, we will answer asap.
If you feel like it, you can also watch the culture videos although it's not absolutely necessary. We just talk about Germans' weird love for beer and football and how they travel to where the sun is shining any chance they get.
Most importantly:
Make a German speaking friend (ideally native level): Take your vocabulary lists and notes and try to talk to your friend using your newly learned vocabulary. Use every word. Do it often and after every lesson. Make mistakes. Let your friend correct you. Make longer and longer sentences using words you do not yet know in German yet by asking your friend for translation help or by using a translation tool. Just try to use German as much as you can, all the time.
Finishing all the videos on this channel will put you just short of A1 level. If you want to progress further than that, please contact us at uncle@unclepolo.com.
We realize that self study can be difficult, so if you want to learn with a real teacher, you can contact us at uncle@unclepolo.com or check out our website www.unclepolo.com for more information. An advanced English level is necessary to learn German with our teachers.
Inserted clips are taken from popular German sitcom Stromberg and are the property of Brainpool TV. It is a German satirical comedy show based on the British show The Office. By the time you can enjoy the show in its original form we have done our job.
