"Plastics products, introduced in our lives in the 50s, are now present in every aspect of our lives. They are everywhere, from the depths of the Mariana Trench to the top of Mount Everest, the air we breathe, and the water we drink. They have been demonstrated to be negatively impact to both human health and the Planet. Plastics pollution and microplastics impact basic Earth-systems functioning and contribute to the rapid increase of other major environmental problems such as climate. Their global impacts are to such an extent that plastics have breached the safe limit for humanity, along with other novel chemicals."

Λίγα λόγια από την Patricia Villarrubia-Gómez:
«Τα πλαστικά, που εισήχθησαν στη ζωή μας τη δεκαετία του '50, είναι πλέον παρόντα σε κάθε πτυχή της ζωής μας. Βρίσκονται παντού, από τα βάθη της τάφρου των Μαριανών μέχρι την κορυφή του Έβερεστ, στον αέρα που αναπνέουμε και στο νερό που πίνουμε. Έχει αποδειχθεί ότι έχουν αρνητικό αντίκτυπο τόσο στην ανθρώπινη υγεία όσο και στον πλανήτη. Η ρύπανση από τα πλαστικά και τα μικροπλαστικά επηρεάζει τη λειτουργία των βασικών συστημάτων της γης και συμβάλλει αρνητικά επιταχύνοντας τη διόγκωση άλλων σημαντικών περιβαλλοντικών προβλημάτων, όπως για παράδειγμα στο θέμα του κλίματος. Οι παγκόσμιες επιπτώσεις που επιφέρει αυτού του είδους η ρύπανση, βρίσκονται σε επίπεδα που πλέον τα πλαστικά, μαζί με άλλες νέες χημικές ουσίες, θεωρούνται πως έχουν παραβιάσει το όριο ασφαλείας για την ανθρωπότητα».
