Former "It girl" Cornelia Guest is famous for her dinner parties in her Texas mansion. She is the daughter of socialite C.Z. Guest and polo champion Winston Frederick Churchill Guest. At her parties, crystal glasses serve as ashtrays, which is one of the most distinctive aspects.
Cornelia Guest said that she always puts cigarettes out for her guests who smoke at dinner parties. By allowing smoking inside, patrons who are smokers won't have to excuse themselves from the table in the middle of the meal. It doesn't cause any problems, she said, but if somebody feels uneasy about the smoking, they can communicate their concerns in a polite manner.
The setting was explained by Guest, who said that she uses miniature shot glasses or other vessels made of crystal, silver, or porcelain, depending on her mood.
Guest's close friend and designer Dennis Basso also spoke out against smoking at social events. He said that regular smokes are fine and that he always carries a pack of Marlboro Lights in his desk drawer for guests, despite the fact that marijuana is legal in New York City.
Basso and Guest have been pals for 40 years and both have a history of frequenting legendary nightclub Studio 54. Nights spent in the company of celebrities such as Andy Warhol, Halston, and Liza Minnelli were recalled with fondness. Basso recalled the elation of finally making it to Studio 54, where they would wave to the adoring fans outside before being let inside. They used stretch limos for most of their transportation back then.
Basso remembers Andy Warhol's "Blind date dinners" at Le Cirque with great nostalgia, despite his inability to recall much else from that decade. Warhol would host get-togethers of strangers and hand them copies of Interview magazine.
Over 600 people attended Basso's most recent fashion presentation, proving that the designer still finds satisfaction in outfitting people despite the glitz and glamour of his past. He's looking forward to maintaining his popularity among younger people and other influential people who recognize the value of his work.
