Most tartans are symmetrical - that is to say their setts will form mirror images of each other if you split them down the middle. But a few are "odd balls" with more of one color on one side of the pattern than on the other. These tartans do not mirror and can be difficult to sew into kilts and pleat up so that they look attractive on the wearer.
