On his first day in office, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak set out his priorities - and embarked on a hectic schedule to revive Mideast peace negotiations.
Barak is due to hold talks in Washington next week to discuss the future of the U-S brokered Wye River Accord between Israel and the Palestinians.
VOICE-OVER:
0002 The change at the top is official - the transfer of power from Israel's former Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu to Ehud Barak complete. Now Barak begins work
on what he says his highest priority - securing peace with Israel's neighbours.
0015 SOUNDBITE: (Hebrew) Ehud Barak, Israeli Prime Minister
"I am aware that today the responsibility is on me. There is great expectation that we,
from this room, from this building, will know how to navigate the state of Israel and the region to security and peace."
0037 During the premiership of Benjamin Netanyahu, tension with the Palestinians increased over the failure to implement the Wye River accord.
0044 The incoming Israeli government will be judged largely on the success of the peace process - both in meeting Palestinian demands for land and improving relations with the Arab world. Much depends on Israel's new foreign minister, David Levi.
0059 He's taken over from Ariel Sharon - once Netanyahu's right hand man.
0101 Another ceremony - this one to mark the Prime Minister taking over the role of defence minister. Barak is a former Chief of Staff of the Israeli Army - well accustomed to inspecting the troops. But it is in the diplomatic arena that he will now be tested. Next week, he flies to Washington for talks at the White House and Congress on the future of the peace process.
0124 End vision
