Sitaramesh Emani, MD, is a cardiologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center who is board certified in heart transplantation. Dr. Emani discusses what to expect if you're having a heart transplant.
Once the heart weakens to the point where regular treatments will no longer work, a heart transplant may be considered. Candidates complete a comprehensive evaluation process, and, while Ohio State cannot control the timing or availability of a donor heart, it actively works to find a match and will notify patients as soon as a heart is available so the transplant can be completed within hours. Recovery following the procedure involves one to two weeks in the hospital and six weeks for total recovery. Heart transplantation does require medications for the rest of the patient’s life to prevent rejection.
