Recently I found out the hard way, that all " Dragon Stone " or Ohko Aquascaping and hardscaping material is not the same thing. originally Dragon Stone was a specific petrified mix of clay and sedimentary/ metamorphic, wind and water weathered, beautiful aquarium same stone.
this stone was and is still inert to changing a tank's PH. However demand is so high for the stone that suppliers, probably often unknowingly are selling inferior ohko stone. some may still even come from Japan and remains neutral, however the clay breaks down and can dissolve over time, especially in an aquascape with a power head or moderate wave activity. This results in bigger TDS (total disolved solids) counts and for some fish and many caridina shrimp such as crystal reds, blue tigers, fancy red tigers, Taiwan bees, king Kong's and galaxys. (or in extreme cases even heartier neocaridina for that matter, like cherry shrimp, blue dreams, red rilis, green jades or yellow sakuras can have dangerous health issues with spikes such as 400 TDS in a week.
The worst type however, is American and European stone that looks similar but is composed of similar material to siltstone, limestone or non-fish and shrimp friendly materials that leach increases in kh, gh,ph and also tds increases. now some of these have calcium and other beneficial minerals if used properly and monitored closely at first, but never the less, it is a case of inter beware... find out the source of their stones.
