The family I live with in Bali was celebrating Metatah, or tooth-cutting ceremony, which according to Hindus is one of the obligatory rituals in a person’s life. It can only be performed on children who are already adults, both male and female, as a symbol of puberty. Balinese also believe that by doing so, “bad” traits such as greed, lust and anger will be reduced.
