There are two key steps to treating floating weeds: 1) Remove as much weed as possible, 2) Reduce nutrients to stop the weeds returning.
Step 1: Remove as much weed as possible
Wait for a day after a windy day when all the weed has been blown into one corner of the dam.
For small infestations, use a pool skimmer or pond net. For mid-sized infestations, we recommend the DeSkuzzer 2.0. The DeSkuzzer 2.0 also clears filamentous algae and organic debris. For large infestations of soft-celled plants (e.g., duckweed, azolla), we recommend ProSkim. ProSkim is available for purchase or hire (from our Melbourne location).
While typically we don’t encourage use of herbicides because they kill everything in your dam (the “good” guys too). Sometimes you have no choice. In this case, we recommend WaterTreats Aquatic Weed Killer. We also highly recommend you use Biostim Accelerator in tandem with herbicide. Biostim Accelerator is a 100% natural biocatalyst which improves the effectiveness of herbicides. Reducing how much herbicide you need. It works by breaking down the hard-to-penetrate slime layer that forms on plants. This allows the herbicide to get in contact with the plant or algae faster. So, less chemical is needed. Spray on a dry day, ideally following a windy day when all the weed is gathered. We recommend a mist nozzle so you can saturate the weeds without pushing them underwater where the chemical washes off. Spot spray or manually remove any weeds that emerge following a major treatment. Remove new growth fast. Floating weeds like duckweed, azolla etc, grow extremely fast. They can double size every 24 hours. So, it’s best to respond immediately. If spraying, you need to wait 10 days before using the water, e.g., for irrigation.
Remember, whatever you kill and don't clear, sinks to the bottom, and becomes fertiliser for next season's weeds. This is why spraying weeds year after year is a bad idea. The sludge (fertiliser) builds up and up, making your dam even more appealing to weeds. The plants also develop tolerance to the chemical. So, before you know it, you're using excessive amounts.
STEP 2: Reduce nutrients to stop weeds returning
To stop weeds returning, you need to change the conditions in your dam. This involves introducing "good" bacteria who consume most the nutrients, starving out weeds and other pests. This is achieved through (i) Aeration and (ii) Biostim.
(i) Aeration means adding oxygen to your water. This provides ideal conditions for “good” (aerobic, oxygen-loving) bacteria to grow. These “good” guys consume nutrients in your dam, e.g., nitrogen and phosphorus. And eat sludge (fertiliser for weeds) on the floor of your dam. With enough nutrient reduction, weeds starve to death.
(ii) Biostim, a probiotic, is also a good idea for ongoing treatment. Biostim feeds the “good” bacteria in your dam which also grows their populations. Eventually nutrient-depleted conditions are created, making it impossible for weeds to grow. Biostim is available in pellets, tablets, liquid or powder. For floating weeds, we recommend Biostim Tablets or Pellets. These tend to settle on the floor where the sludge and nutrients are most concentrated.
