Although small in size, Arkansas, sitting as it does astride several major east and west migration routes, played a substantial role in the settlement of the middle South both before and after the Civil War. This discussion features an introduction to some six major genealogy and family history sources for our state and demonstrates how to locate and use them successfully in one’s family history research. Russell P. Baker is the retired archival supervisor and former acting director of the Arkansas State Archives in Little Rock. Since 2013, he has been the Senior Editor of the Arkansas Family Historian. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Arkansas Genealogical Society for many decades. He is the author of two of AGS’s most popular publications, the Arkansas Township Atlas and Arkansas Post Offices: From Memdag to Norsk, A Historical Directory 1832-1900. Over the years, he has frequently lectured nationally on genealogical research and theory.
