We traveled to Montana to drive the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition and 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X both on- and off-road (per Cars.com’s ethics policy, we pay for all travel and lodging at such manufacturer-sponsored events). Road Test Editor Brian Normile got to put both mid-size off-roaders through their paces. Neither truck is happiest on-road, though the less hardcore AT4X provides a slightly better experience. But who cares? This is about getting dirty and challenging these trucks to go places most can’t, and both the AT4X and AT4X AEV Edition do a good job of that.
The trucks handled everything we could throw at them with ease. Unsurprisingly, the AEV Edition — with a 4.5-inch lift instead of 3 inches and 35-inch mud-terrain tires instead of 33-inchers — is a bit more capable off-road, but the trade-off in cost may not be worth it. GMC hasn’t announced pricing yet for the 2024 Canyon AT4X AEV Edition, but it should be more than the AT4X and likely north of $60,000.
