Composed in memory of John Cage, one of the composer who influenced Tan Dun the most in his early compositional stage, this piece continued many of Cage's innovation on piano. Similar to other works in his 1990s period, listeners can sense the Chinese tradition folk music easily. There are sounds similar to Guzheng古箏and Chinese chimes編鐘 through out the work. These sounds were created by playing certain passages on the piano strings in the same way as one would on Guzheng, and pressing overtones in the lower register of the piano. The work also develops as its title, in the order of C, A, G, E, and almost only focus on these four notes for the entire piece. The minimal usage of notes, hence contributed a more spiritual feeling towards the piece.
Pianist: Yaoyue Huang
Performed on the original size piano: Steinway Model D
