DISTRICT SHIGAR : THE LAND OF MOUNTAINS
Shigar district is gateway to great Karakoram, covers an area of 8,500 sq.
km. It is located on an ancient trading route from Central Asia. At the head
of the Braldo Valley is Baltoro Glacier, 35 miles long, and Shigar's own
northern ridge rises to a height of 28,265 , the pinnacle of which is the K2,
the world's second highest peak. Shigar valley is nearly at half an hour drive
from Skardu.
It has a vast agricultural land and several aracve tourist spots. The ferle
land of Shigar is irrigated with Shigar River. It is abundant in fruits like
grapes, peaches, pears, walnuts and apricots. The valley stretches to 170
km from Skardu to Askole.
Famous Tourist Spots: The restoraon and conservaon of heritage sites in
Shigar is praiseworthy. The 400 years old Shigar fort, which has been
restored and is being used as a heritage museum, is a great example of
reuse of heritage structures in Pakistan. Amburiq Mosque is another
example of heritage preservaon. It was recognized with a UNESCO Award
for heritage conservaon in 2005
