Fresh from the showcase here at SwissWatchExpo, today we're exploring the IWC collection - the Portugieser and the Portofino. There's a very significant and stark difference between these two models. Although both of them are considered more of a dress watch than a sport watch. The Portugieser is actually a dress watch that was sort of morphed into the design of a sport watch. However, the original intention of the Portugieser was to be a larger watch in general. So what you'll notice is, on the frontline of that we have here, we've got two of the original Portofinos developed in 1984. 1984 was when the original Portofino was actually introduced. The Portugieser was actually introduced back in the late 1940s, early 1950s, or that was when the original concept design was established. The reason that that watch came about, this particular model, was you had Portuguese businessmen who approached IWC and wanted a professional style watch. But they wanted it larger because they were traveling, and they wanted something a little bit more bold and a little bit more expressive in their watch collection because at the time men's watches were very, very small.
In fact, they were anywhere from between 31 and 34 millimeters, most being between 33 and 34 millimeters. So the Portugieser represented a whole bold new design. So I guess in some sort of a way, all the watches that we see today that are very, very large in their appearance can be dedicated to the original Portugieser because this is the original large watch. These watches are in anywhere between 43 and 45 millimeters, and the reason that they go in that expansive line is because there's the Yacht Club, which is the, the true sport line of the Portugieser model of IWC. This is a water resistant model. It still keeps in line with all of the design function of the original Portugieser. But what's interesting is the bezel is different on this watch than it is on this watch. The Portugieser Yacht Club has an exposed bezel that actually moves outside the case and then curves back in.
So when you look at the face of the watch, it actually appears larger than the case itself, which is unlike the original Portugieser, which has a bezel that from the case, it curves in and has a domed sort of feel around the outside edge where it touches the crystal. So it gives the a little bit narrower appearance. So it can throw people off because the Yacht Club can appear much larger than it actually is. Of course, that's in keeping with the whole style of the original idea of Portugieser. One of the interesting things about IWC is even though this watch has a rubber style strap, it moves in line with the case. So it actually touches a lot of rubber straps or synthetic style straps, don't actually touch the case. They're not in line with them. They're very disproportionate to the case, they move around there's gaps, there's these types of things. IWC does a really great job of making sure that all the details are followed. That flows through to the backside of the watch too, because the Portugieser is one of the few in the lineup of IWC that actually has an in-house movement. As you can see from this watch, it's highly decorated. The IWC imprint is here at the bottom of the weighted, the rotating weight inside the movement,
When you move it in the light, it really shines, it really reflects. It is just an absolutely gorgeous movement. This of course is the, what is considered to be red gold, not rose gold. The reason is, is because of the tint of the gold.
