Different Catfish Eat Different ways... some are scavengers, some bottom feeders, and some are predators... But in France, scientists have discovered some catfish who like to eat pigeons!
They are found in Soutwestern France along the banks of river tarn where you can see these amazing catfish in action...
They swim up close to shore, and use their whiskers to feel out pigeons close to the water. Then, they strike - actually beaching themselves for a moment to grab their prey.
The species is known simply as the European Catfish and come from the Rhine River. They can grow up to 3 feet long.
Why these catfish do this is not known. But scientists point out they are an alien species, introduced into the area in 1983. They think it might be a lack of their normal diet being available, or hightened competition within their species.
Whatever the cause, pigeons look to be on the losing side. Out of 54 strikes observed by scientists, 28% were successful for the catfish.
So what do you think? Are these Catfish zombies from outer space, or is it just another example of evolutionary adaptation at work. Leave you thoughts in the comment section below!
