Since former European Commission President Manuel Barroso first stood before the European Parliament to take stock of the work of the prior year and consider future challenges on 7 September 2010, the annual speech by the President of the European Commission on the state of the European Union has become a September tradition.
President von der Leyen was appointed by national leaders and elected by the European Parliament after she presented her Political Guidelines.

Delivering on the political priorities
The President also sets out how the EU Commission will address the most pressing challenges the European Union is facing and ideas for shaping the future of the EU. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, will deliver her address on 16 September 2020 (09:00 CEST). The speech will be followed by a plenary debate with Members of the European Parliament.
