Thousands of prisoners broke out of Haiti’s main prison on Sunday after armed gangs stormed the facility overnight.
More than 3,600 inmates — about 97 per cent of those incarcerated at the jail — managed to escape during the night of violence which hit the capital Port-au-Prince on Saturday.
At least a dozen people — including two prison guards — were killed after police reportedly fled the National Penitentiary, where several gang leaders were said to have been held. The violence also spread to the city’s airport and football stadium.
