In this video, we will be exploring the first Chinatown in Manila built in 1581 called the Parian. It was home to a vibrant mix of Chinese (called Sangleys), Chinese Catholics, and Filipinos. Chinese traders had been visiting the Philippines since at least the 8th century, but it was during the Spanish colonization of Manila when a permanent population of Chinese began to settle on the island of Luzon.
