Today we harvest and process bone marrow cell line aspirate and re-inject into this patient's arthritic knee with large meniscal tear. The question moving forward with intra-articular biologics, is not if they work or not, it's what works best? Is it PRP or platelet rich plasma, of which there are a variety of types and methods. Is it BMAC "stem cell" bone marrow aspirate? or possibly "MFAT?" MFAT injection therapy is the harvest of abdominal adipocytes (fat cells)
and then the reintroduction of those cells intra-articularly. No studies have been performed prospectively comparing the approaches. I don't believe any other sites are performing MFAT injection in Florida at present. Currently significant research has occurred with MFAT infection showing efficacy, but again highly controlled studies are needed to determine the efficacy and longevity. Recently a 2 year study has come out showing significant efficacy, in moderate to severe osteoarthritis. We're hopeful these therapies can delay or obviate the need for joint replacement.
Microfragmented Adipose Tissue Injection (MFAT) is a medical procedure that uses liposuction to harvest adipose tissue. The harvested tissue is then processed and broken down into tiny chunks of fat. The most common trade name of the kit used to create MFAT is Lipogems.
