Johan Cruyff was the captain of a Dutch team still smarting from their defeat to West Germany in the 1974 World Cup. Cruyff was the best player in the world and after failing again at Euro 1976, the Dutch talisman was due to lead his side out in Argentina for the upcoming World Cup. However, months prior to the tournament he announced his retirement from international football and left Barcelona to play in America. In 2008, he revealed that he and his family were the victims of a kidnap attempt and he wasn’t in the correct frame of mind to play in the tournament. The Netherlands equalled their achievement of four years prior, losing to hosts Argentina in the final.
