Welcome to Ventana Wildlife Society's Condor Sanctuary in San Simeon, CA. Located in the mountains near the coast of San Simeon, the sanctuary has excellent condor habitat and is a perfect location for releasing condors to the wild. Ventana Wildlife Society has been releasing captive-bred condors to Big Sur, California since 1997 and San Simeon since 2015. At this location, scientists release condors from the field pen. They also place carcasses of stillborn domestic calves outside the field pen to provide condors, including newly released ones, with a clean (non-lead) back-up food supply. Scavengers such as bears and coyotes are kept out of the area by a fence. You may also see a variety of other bird species such as bald eagles, golden eagles, turkey vultures and ravens. Golden eagles may sometimes attack the condors but rarely ever injure or kill them.
