This is your first interaction with the Arishok, the military leader of the Qunari. In your first encounter there are two ways to ensure he respects you.

One) bring the magic elf Fenris who knows the Qun
Two) Choose the option in Dialogue " I was promised future profits"

Those are the first two steps to respect and the coveted, "A worthy Rival Achievement"
