We use this small Honda tiller to aid in the removal of weeds on these planted beds. Typically this type of growing field is hoed by hand, but we have found this method to be very effective. It is how ever important to rake over the freshly tilled soil with a rake. This helps to remove the weeds that are loose and also leaves the soil smooth and less likely to allow new weeds to quickly gather and grow.
Note, that the machine has no wheels, and the rotor runs froward. This way the control of the tiller is via the dragging bar at the rear. If you push down it will dig into the soil and when lifting up it will roll forward and stay higher in the soil.
There is some technique to it, but seeing as this particular machine is tiny, (due to the fact that we have to run between the rows of plants with out damaging them or their roots) it is still quite easy to control.
