State of Tennessee v. Sean Finnegan
Charges: Sean Finnegan, 56, is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated rape, aggravated kidnapping, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with evidence in the death of Jennifer Paxton, 36.
Note: In a SEPARATE case, Finnegan and Dishman are charged with rape of a child under the age of 3 years old and exploitation of a child.
Sean Finnegan and his girlfriend Rebecca Dishman conspired to lure Jennifer Paxton to Finnegan's home sometime between December 1 and December 30, 2019. They had offered Ms. Paxton a place to stay. Once Paxton was in their home in Oakridge, they attacked her with a baseball bat. The coconspirators then proceeded to starve, beat, rape, and murder Paxton.
Once Paxton was deceased, the couple continued to desecrate her body. Parts of her body, including a breast and her nose, were removed. Her bones were broken, and ligaments were torn to facilitate storing her in a chest-style freezer. At some point, Rebecca Fishman casually shared with a neighbor that she and Finnegan had a body stored in a freezer. The neighbor shared this information with Law Enforcement, which helped them obtain a search warrant for the home.
Once Finnegan believed the authorities were moving in on him, he removed Jennifer Paxton from the freezer and stored her frozen corpse under his bed. In August 2020, Jennifer was discovered by Law Enforcement in his home, and both Finnegan and Fishman were charged with her murder. In a twist, Rebecca Fishman went to trial in September of 2023. She pleaded guilty to the murder of Jennifer Paxton and two counts of rape of a child (separate case). She received a life sentence plus 50 years contingent upon her truthfully testifying against Finnegan at his trial.
If convicted, Sean Finnegan could receive the death penalty.
It's important to understand that the separate child rape and exploitation charges evolved out of the investigation of Paxton's murder. Evidence of the child's crimes was discovered while searching the home. The child in question is under (3) years old and unrelated to Paxton.
The jury will be sequestered, and the trial is expected to last approximately (2) weeks.
Finnegan is represented by Knoxville attorneys Christopher "Kit" Rodgers and Forrest Wallace. Don R. Ash is the special judge assigned to the case.
Anderson County District Attorney General Dave Clark is seeking the death penalty against Finnegan. According to the circuit court clerk's office, Assistant District Attorney General Sarah Winningham Keith will prosecute Finnegan
