VIDEO DESCRIPTION
This is my S-Rank guide for Contra: Shattered Soldier. This is the PS3 version of the original PS2 title, which was downloaded from the PS3ʼs store and played on that console.
As this is an S-Rank walkthrough, and therefore advanced by its nature, beginner and intermediate concepts will not be covered. I wrestled internally with including a begginerʼs tutorial that might serve as a prelude to this walkthrough but in the end decided against it. If you are able to be taught at a higher level, then these latter stages of player growth had to be dispensed with to fit within the time constraints of this short game. Of course, video lengths could have been elongated to accommodate longer teachings, but I decided against that for two reasons: (1), I did not want to alter the videos from their literal running time; I wanted instead to uphold the frenetic pace of the game and adapt the pace of my commentary to the game, and not vice versa; and (2), I wanted to keep the commentary at an advanced level to match the type of player skill level needed to understand the challenge at hand and proceed on the assumption that he has got his prerequisite essentials from what would be long and repetitive play. There is no shortcut for success with Contra.
This walkthroughʼs videos contain no editing or alterations save from where the videos were “cut” at their specific “in” and “out” points. Other exceptions regarding editing occur when a part of the game transitions to a cut scene during game play: these moments are trimmed out as well.
Please note that this walkthrough does not represent a “no death” run/campaign. Please also note that missions 1-4 were played using the main campaign mission selection mode. Because the final missions are locked, they were selected through and played in Training Mode for convenience. Training Mode is both a blessing and a curse. Although you can select whatever mission you have unlocked, you are given no way to restart the mission you select, and the only way to exit out of the mission is to die 30 times on purpose or press the PS button and select “Reset Game.” Being given 30 lives is fine for practicing a mission, but if you are aiming to S rank the mission, you cannot die any way, so the 30 lives are redundant.
The game offers two difficulties: Easy and Normal. The former gives you more lives and more credits; the latter gives you fewer of each and is the difficulty you must complete the campaign on to unlock the final missions . Training Mode by default is Normal difficulty.
S-RANK REQUIREMENTS
