TURKEY-US AGREE TO ‘ISIS-FREE ZONE’
Turkey and the US have agreed to create an ISIS-free zone along Turkey’s border with Syria. A Pentagon official says the zone is ‘to ensure greater security and stability.’ He said the joint military effort would not include a ‘no-fly’ zone. Turkey has long requested a ‘no-fly’ zone inside the Syrian border. The two countries made the decision before NATO’s extraordinary meeting on Tuesday. NATO said Turkey requested the meeting to discuss the recent terrorist attacks and also to inform its Allies of the measures it is taking.
MERS ‘EFFECTIVELY OVER’
South Korea has declared it is for now free of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome. The Health Ministry said that while it was too early to declare the outbreak officially over, citizens should return to daily life. The country reported its first case of the virus in May. 36 people in South Korea have died from MERS. 17,000 people were quarantined and 186 people were infected with the virus. The Health Ministry reports that only 12 people remain hospitalised. No new cases have been reported since July 4th.
CREDITORS ARRIVE FOR BAILOUT TALKS
Greece’s international creditors have gone to Athens to discuss a third bailout for the country. The Greek government has already approved two separate packages of reform measures. This was a condition to begin negotiations to secure a three-year loan worth 95 billion dollars. Talks had been delayed for several days due to logistic and security issues. The negotiators arrived a day after former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis confirmed he had made secret plans to hack into citizens' tax codes to issue a parallel currency if Greece exited the eurozone.
MASS GRAVE EXCAVATED
Forensics experts have begun unearthing what is thought to be one of the largest mass graves in Colombia. They suspect the graves in Medellin may contain 90 to 300 bodies. Officials believe that some of the graves may belong to people who began disappearing in army operations in 2002 and others to those killed by drug gangs and right-wing paramilitaries.
