Your airway management is the MOST critical part of anesthesia and surgery! Your airway is what you breathe through to get oxygen to your brain and body... but under anesthesia you may not be breathing! That's where the intubation tools come in to manage your airway and breathing for surgery.

That's why you have a breathing tube during general anesthesia, even though you don't remember it! You may or may not have been intubated, and you probably wouldn't know. You lose your memories under anesthesia, so patients don’t know what happens to their bodies in surgery. My patients are always very surprised to hear they will have a breathing tube during general anesthesia in their mouth and airway.

They often don’t believe they’ve ever had a breathing tube before, even if they’ve had surgery and anesthesia before!

That’s good because it means they were fully asleep when it went in, and that’s what we want. It also means they didn't have many side effects from the breathing tube (like sore throat, fat lip, dental damage, vocal cord dysfunction).
