Agriculture makes up the majority of Nepal's economy, accounting for 36% of GDP and employing almost two-thirds of the labor force. Nepal's whole land area is utilized for agriculture to the tune of 30%. Nepal has a competitive edge in agricultural output because of its location, water resources, and plentiful labor supply. While there are regional variations in temperature and precipitation, Nepal's wet season is generally the same throughout the country. Over 7,500 people are employed by over 180 agribusiness projects that have received NPR 3.37 billion (USD 338 million) in foreign investment, which is a significant amount.
Despite having the resources necessary for high land production, many households in Nepal, especially those in its mountainous regions, face food shortages for 4 to 9 months out of the year. The FAO rates more than 50% of Nepal's districts as food insecure. Low agricultural production is a problem brought on by dispersed subsistence farming, a lack of technical expertise, and inadequate irrigation infrastructure. Unpredictable weather patterns, bug outbreaks, a lack of fertilizers, and inferior seeds make the issue worse.
In this episode of Satyam vada, we take a deeper dive into understanding the agriculture in Nepal
