Most of the scholars today are of the opinion that in order for a person to be a Marji' Deeni [a religious reference for emulation] - one of the conditions is that they must be male. However, some Maraaji' like Ayatollah Sheikh Muhammad Ishaq Fayadh (ha) and others, disagree with this and say that there is nothing in the religion to prohibit the woman from taking the role of Marji'iyah in the religious affairs.
In the Shi'i school, the women have an elevated status that cannot be compared to status given by any other sect or religion for that matter. For how can you compare the rank of Sayyida Fatima (as), to those other than her?? How can you compare the rank of Sayyida Zainab (as), to those other than her? While these were great women, who were also part of the Ahlulbayt al-Nubuwwah - it is not just these women who we hold in high esteem, or that could reach these high ranks.
In this video, Sheikh Yasser al Habib tells the story of a woman, who was not Arab, nor was she from the lineage of Fatima (as), nor was she from Bani Haashim - however she attained this great rank of Marji'iyah whereby all the Shi'a of the nation would refer to her for their Islamic guidance and rulings for a short period of time. This is the story of Sulayl al-Nubia.
