The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is located in northeastern Minnesota. It is America's most visited wilderness and is threatened by proposed sulfide-ore copper mining.

Birch Lake, a recreational lake outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, is where the sulfide-ore copper mine is proposed. It has long been polluted by sulfate from past and current taconite mines, which has largely been ignored. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency recently released a draft impaired waters list for 2024, which includes Birch Lake and a portion of the Dunka River as impaired for sulfate.
