"What Makes Us Human: From Genes to Machines", June 2018, Jerusalem:
The Next Exponential
Kamila Markram, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland
Human intelligence comes from our deep immersion with the physical, social and cultural environments. Since the scientific revolution, science has transformed these dimensions of our existence. The progress was slow at first with twelve thousand years from the agricultural to the industrial revolutions. Today, artificial intelligence is starting to outperform humans in sensing and responding to all things - globally. Paired with science artificial intelligence could generate the answers to clean energy, environments and healthy living. But artificial intelligence can only act if all science is open. In the past science belonged to the elite, with open science, it can belong to all. In much the same way that science guided human intelligence out of superstition and prejudice, open science can guide artificial intelligence to exponential innovation that will meet any challenge the human race may face and to a collective utopian. But first, science needs to be unblocked.
