Harvesting, grinding and cooking sweet sorghum syrup at the Patterson Family Sorghum Mill.
2020 was our 30th season making sweet sorghum syrup.
The cane was harvested with an International Harvester binder pulled with a 1973 Ford 7000 tractor and loaded onto a wagon pulled with a 1990 Ford 5610 tractor.
The cane was ground using a Goldens Model 36 (circa 1940) cane mill pulled with a flat belt powered by an Allis Chalmers W25 skid motor (circa 1940).
The syrup was cooked on a 12' x 4' copper bottomed continuous evaporator pan with the sides and bars made of poplar and heated with a propane burner.
