WHY DO PEOPLE GET ROAD RAGE??? | THE 4 REASONS (NOT 5) THAT CAUSE ROAD RAGE
In this weeks video, I want to share with you the top 4 Reasons why it is you get road rage. Helping you to stay in control when you are behind the wheel
Reason one is that your car is an extension of your home. Now imagine that someone built their house right next to yours. SO close that you can see the people live in there and when they open their door it hits your wall.
Leading you to feel pressured, angry and irritated that someone would get that close to you
Well, the same feelings come up when someone is in their car and comes a little too close. They are invading your space and there is, therefore, a feeling of danger and risk evoked in you.
Leading on from that reason 2 is feeling shocked or surprised. Just like someone invading your space your automatic fight response comes up when you get shocked.
making you act in an aggressive way to protect yourself from the danger of an intruder
Reason 3 is that your car feels a safe space to be angry with no repercussions. Remember your car is an extension of your home where you feel justified in being however you want to be.
So in your car, you feel it's ok and justified to be angry and have road rage as it's your space to do what you want with
And with this space comes a sense of entitlement and empowerment from feeling and expressing anger. Add to that others do the same and it normalises excessive anger and rage which you wouldn't dream of acting on in your day to day life outside of your car.
And lastly your car has become a place to feel empowered and in control of your surroundings. All of the above points lead to a feeling of justification that it's ok to be angry and that you can be who you want in your car.
A way of releasing anger and stress in a safe way.
However, studies show that talking about and showing anger not actually help to stop feeling angry but instead makes you feel more angry for long.
Road rage is commonplace. Many of us just see it as a normal part of life yet really it's just keeping you locked in the same repetitive behaviour and mindset of prolonging the effect of anger in your life.
Let's start addressing what it is that is really making you angry rather than finding short-term releases that make you feel good in the short term but don’t actually help in the long term.
