Their are many ways and materials to prime a canvas before painting. This is a tutorial video of how to prime canvas with black acrylic gesso for oil or any medium painting.
To prime this canvas I have used
Daler rowney black gesso
Paint brush
Water
Mixing little water to make gesso makes it easier to apply layers.
Let gesso dry completely before applying next layer.
Move brush in one direction
Many people sand between layers of gesso but I haven't done that.
Make sure you remove brush hair from canvas before drying.
Priming canvas before painting protects the canvas from oxidizing due to oil paints.
Priming the canvas before pour painting gives the pour paint more flow.

Do you have to prime a canvas for acrylic paint?
If you use acrylic paint on oil-primed canvas the oily surface will eventually cause the paint to peel and flake, most canvases are primed with an acrylic primer which can be used as a ground for both acrylic and oil paints. This primer can be applied directly on the canvas.

What do you use to prime a canvas?
Gesso, was traditionally used to prepare or prime a surface so Oil paint would adhere to it. Gesso is the same as a primer, as in 'pre-primed canvas'. It is made from a combination of paint pigment, chalk and binder.
