“The Legacy, The History: Celebrating Black History Month,” moderated by Clark County Commissioner William McCurdy, features Claytee White, director of the UNLV Oral History Research Center; Ramon Savoy, a former host on urban contemporary radio station KCEP Power 88 and former publisher of Nevada’s only African-American newspaper, the Las Vegas Sentinel-Voice, whose publication ceased in 2014; Brenda Williams, a one-time Las Vegas city councilwoman who inspired a book about her experience as a student at the Historic Westside School, which was built in 1923 and closed in 1967 with the end of desegregation; and Jackie Brantley, who has served on multiple boards, was born in Las Vegas and grew up blocks from the once-bustling Jackson Street, a former business and community hub for historic West Las Vegas. Taped at Historic Westside Legacy Park, the special is a production of Clark County Television. The park, funded by Clark County, is a tribute to those who have led the Historic Westside community through the years and features 36 individuals with historical and biographical information on-site. Art is featured throughout the park, including a statue of former President Barack Obama.
