Lungs : external features and relations -
------------------------------------------------------------------
The lungs are essential respiratory organs located in the thoracic cavity, featuring a conical shape with an apex extending above the first rib and a base resting on the diaphragm.
Each lung has three surfaces: costal (adjacent to the rib cage), mediastinal (facing the mediastinum), and diaphragmatic (sitting on the diaphragm). The right lung is divided into three lobes (superior, middle, and inferior) by the horizontal and oblique fissures, while the left lung has two lobes (superior and inferior) separated by the oblique fissure and houses the cardiac notch. Important anatomical relations include the heart, great vessels, esophagus, and trachea. Understanding these features is vital for FMGE, NEET PG, and USMLE aspirants. 🫁🔍 #medicaleducation
